Amongst the crowded marketplace of luxury travel destinations, Cancun is commonly recognized as one of the most enticing cities in the world. Travel organizations and publications regularly cite Cancun’s incredible variety of shopping, dining and relaxation options, all set against the stunning backdrop of the ecologically-vibrant Yucatan Peninsula and the Caribbean Sea. Additionally, one of Cancun’s favorite hotels – the JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa – was recently honored as the world’s best resort destination. If you needed any additional incentives to visit Cancun, the city’s remarkable development and progress in recent years coupled with awards from prestigious travel organizations should be more than enough to convince the most skeptical jetsetters.
In a recent study of the world’s best resorts, the annual Expedia Insiders’ List found the JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa to be not only Cancun’s best resort, but the top-ranked resort amongst 80,000 worldwide destinations. The study utilized a detailed formula to gauge each resort’s quality and value, incorporating such elements as hotel amenities and visitor responses. Announced in May of this year, the Expedia award was added to the resort’s growing list of distinctions, including the recently-awarded AAA Five-Diamond Award – the travel organization’s top resort ranking – and Travel and Leisure Magazine’s coveted Top 5 Latin American Spa ranking. Within the local listings of the Expedia study, the CasaMagna Marriott Cancun finished a close second to the JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa, earning praise for its service and luxurious amenities.
However, such awards wouldn’t be possible without Cancun’s rich culture and incredible scenery. Cancun’s Hotel Zone is home to an incredible array of gourmet restaurants, luxury shops, art galleries and spas. The downtown area of Cancun – known as El Centro – is famous for traditional Mexican cuisine, locally-produced souvenirs and a festive atmosphere that captures the best of both Mexico and the Caribbean region. With so many cultural options, it is no surprise that Cancun has managed to captivate visitors of all ages and tastes.
Yet, what makes Cancun truly unique is the combination of luxury options and one-of-a-kind recreation. Unlike most of the world’s premier luxury destinations, Cancun is home to miles of beautiful, wide beaches. While Cancun’s sandy playgrounds are perfect for relaxation, adventurous travelers will find plenty of offshore activities from scuba diving and snorkeling to kayaking and windsurfing. Cancun also has the unique distinction of resting in the heart of one of the world’s most ecologically-diverse destinations. Within just a few hours of the city, visitors can experience the lush rainforests of the Yucatan Peninsula, immense underground rivers, protected nature preserves, marine parks and the famous ruins of the Mayan Empire. All of the activities are available to visitors via affordable day tours and ecologically-minded recreation excursions.
Though the resorts and recreation options certainly deserve the accolades, the standing of Cancun in the world of international travel is even more impressive when considering that the city was struck by the strongest Atlantic storm on record just three years ago. Just one year after Hurricane Wilma threatened Cancun’s future, the city began to reemerge as an even more luxurious Caribbean destination. Cancun and its resorts devoted more than $1.5 billion to a citywide rebuilding effort in 2006 and 2007, including an expansion of the city’s famous beaches that doubled the width from 70 feet to 140 feet. Today, with all of the construction complete, visitors are able to experience a Cancun that is bigger, better and more relaxing than ever.
When it is all added up – the culture, the scenery, the remarkable recovery and now an award for the world’s best resort – Cancun stands above of the rest as the Caribbean’s premier destination and one of the world’s best vacation spots.
